NLT Study Bible Seminar + Giveaway!
posted by Laura Bartlett at 4:44 PM
We’ve started the countdown: all of the hardcover NLT Study Bibles are arriving soon and will start shipping out of our warehouse. Most bookstores will have Some bookstores will start having the NLTSB in stock by one month from today: August 28!

We’re holding a couple of online events to celebrate:
1: Live NLT Study Bible online seminars. NLT SB General Editor Sean Harrison will be offering an online seminar to explain the features of the NLTSB and to demonstrate the usage of the NLTSB to study Genesis. Details: seminars will be less than an hour long each, on August 7 at 11AM CST and August 28 at 7pm CST. Click here to register.

2: 31-day NLT Study Bible giveaway. During his seminars, Sean will be answering questions about the NLT Study Bible. So we want to know what questions you have about the NLT Study Bible. Post your question in the comments of this post, and each day, I will randomly choose a winner of a hardcover NLT Study Bible from among the people who posted new questions that day. Update: The contest is over. Please feel free to continue asking questions and we'll try to answer them, but we won't be choosing any more winners. I will post a list of many of your questions and the answers to those questions once we can work our way through them.

Rules: You can’t win if you don’t ask a question about the NLT Study Bible. Don’t put your mailing address in your comment--if you win, someone will email you to ask you for your mailing address. We’ll send out all 31 of the Bibles the first week of September. You can only win once—but feel free to ask questions for as many days as you want until you win. Starting today.

In addition to these fine questions, does the NLTSB have a page or two with something like "Steps To Peace With God," "God's Plan To Save You," or "Plan Of Salvation?" (I have many Study Bibles (and regular Bibles of course)that include the above. Many people (and not just the Gideons International)think it's a great idea to have that available.)

I greatly enjoy writing my own personal notes in my bible. Is there enough blank space on the page to write notes and comments? The space doesn't have to be just in the margins as I always footnote my notes. And closely related to this question: Is the paper thick enough to handle the writing of notes on it?

A second question I have is I have been hearing that the text of the NLT has been (or is being) updated again for the third time. Is this true? And if it is, the this new Study bible feature the update? Also, if true, where can I read up on what has been changed?

A thrid question I have, though not entirely related to this study bible, is do you know of any good sources defending dynamic translations as good translations for study purposes?

Thank you for your time!

I'd be interested in knowing a bit about the print run. I expect that you would print thousands of text blocks, and then bind them differently, according to expected sales. You've got three pricepoints, based on type of bindings - hardback, tu-tone, and leather. What proportion of the print run gets devoted to each binding type? Did you reserve any blocks uncut, that could be made into limited edition smythsewn bindings?

Ron, I think the NLT team has created two different products - the life application bible is designed for a practical christian experience, while the new study bible is designed to provide a more academic approach to scripture and the theology in it.

But joining them together- now that would be something! but probably more than we would want to carry.

Will there be a review for each book of the Bible on the background / culture of the people at the time the book was written? I think it will help us study more effectively if we know why as their culture at that point in time may make no sense to us now. E.g. Knowing that the manger is actually within a house and not a separate holding. I never knew about that fact. Always thought it was a stable. But recently found out that in those times, people have an area near the main door which holds their animals. The animals are staying in the house and not outside as they are regarded as wealth and important enough to want to keep safe.

Ron, I think I misunderstood you before. There are life application bibles available in KJV, NKJV, NLT, NASB, and NIV. You asked: Would these new study notes be available in those versions. Hmmm. How does that work? Does Tyndale sell rights and licence the notes to other publishers, and what kind of limitations do they place on them to modify them? What kind of income for Tyndale comes from such licensing?

I think it would be interesting to know about subsidized copies for poor pastors. Is there any plan to provide copies to ministers who can't afford this resource? Perhaps as part of a package available to annual denominational gatherings in Africa which were British colonies.

What made the NLT change back to "for forgiveness of sins" in Acts 2:38 in the 2007 revision, rather than keeping "to show that you have received forgiveness of sins" in the 2004 edition? I think the 2007 correction is great, but I just wonder why the change was made and what explanation the NLTSB gives in the commentary for this verse.

I like the idea of looking at what the original writers were intending for their readers as a theme or approach to writing the study notes. Reminds me of Mortimer Adler's book "How to read a book", where he makes a strong effort to invite readers to clearly understand an author's intent before critiquing a text. For you, in your notes, it raises an interesting dimension of possible arrogance, in suggesting that ancient people "would have" understood what an author intended in those days. What kind of editorial process did the NLTSB go through to ensure that a balanced approach was offered in the notes?

As I recall, the LASB has been offered without red lettering. Is there any chance of a NLTSB without the red-letter text? I would willingly sacrifice my preference for single columns (I understand the spacing issue) for an edition without red lettering. Especially considering the potential significance of this release. I think this could be the standard study Bible for some time to come.

Will the NLT Study Bible include the texts of John 5:3b-4 ("...waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel of the Lord went down and stirred up the water at certain times. Whoever first stepped in after the stirring of the water was healed from whatever disease which he suffered.") and 1 John 5:7 ("...in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one.")?

I know many modern translation Bibles do not include them, but most do not include a note for the omission, if they are a study Bible. If the NLTSB doesn't include them, will it have the note for the omission?
